Established in 1898, Anamoose has been a longtime fixture in the state of North Dakota as it was alongside the expanding Soo Line Railroad. Many people were hired to lay steel and ties in order to build the railroad.

Of those workers were Chippewa Indians who often noticed a dog running in that area, and began referring to the area as "Anamoose" in their native language which translated to "dog"...  And the name stuck.

During Anamoose's peak or "Hay Day" it was home to a grocery store, drug store, three cafes, a bowling alley, theater, jeweler, three banks, two doctors, a veterinarian, a law office, a Grand Opera House, two implement dealerships, a creamery, two barbers, a funeral home and countless other businesses. It was booming!

Today what remains is still the hometown charm of a nostalgic "Small Town". The railroad still passes through, though not stopping anymore for just a wave of a lantern at 4 am as was 100 years ago. You can still buy unique items at the Hope Chest Gift Shop, grab a special coffee from the Mocha Coffee Shop or enjoy a meal at a cafe or supper at the 1909 Steakhouse & Lounge.
