Southern California is reeling from the latest school shooting.

The Los Angeles Times reports two students died when a third opened fire with a pistol Thursday at Santa Clarita, Saugus High School.

Killed were cheerleader Gracie Anne Muehlberger, 15, and ROTC member Dominic Blackwell, 14. Three other students were wounded and the shooter turned the weapon on himself. He died over the weekend.

Two of the wounded students were treated and released while a third remained hospitalized over the weekend.

Police investigators are struggling to make sense of the tragedy. Detectives say Nathaniel Berthow showed up at school Thursday, pulled a 45-caliber pistol from his backpack and opened fire on five students, apparently at random.

A vigil was planned for Sunday evening to honor the victims of the shooting. Authorities say the school will stay closed until December 2.

Counselors will be available to talk to traumatized students.
