North Dakota weather can be tough. Snow, rain (less lately), sub-zero temps, and a fair amount of wind -- we get it all.

I always thought we had pretty extreme wind in North Dakota; I was surprised to find that there were several other places that have it much worse.

A Study

Stacker looked at data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) to determine which cities have the windiest weather. They put together a list of the top 50 cities.

The cities were ranked based on information gathered between 1984 and 2020, according to WhatsUpNewp.com.

Fun Fact

According to WhatsUpNewp.com, the strongest winds ever recorded happened all the way back in 1934 in New Hampshire. The Mount Washington Observatory recorded winds gusts as high as 231 mph.

The Windiest Weather

North Dakota doesn't have the most/strongest winds. It looks like that honor goes to Amarillo, Texas, followed by Cheyenne. Wyoming, then Casper, Wyoming.

The annual average wind speed in Amarillo is 12.9 mph and the windiest month is said to be April. This according to the source.

North Dakota

We get some pretty strong winds in North Dakota, so I'm sure it's no surprise to you that two of our cities made the top 50 list.

Grand Forks:

Grand Forks came in at number 27 with an average annual windspeed of 10.3 mph.

Fargo:

Fargo made it the highest on the list at number 15. The average windspeed in Fargo is 11.1 mph, and the windiest month is April.

If you're like me, you're probably surprised we didn't rank higher on this list. In any case, I'll take our lower ranking as a win.
