The city of Mandan has grown over the last few years - and with that growth has seen an increase in crime.

The Bismarck Tribune has reported the city has seen an 18 percent "uptick" in calls to the police between 2015 and 2016.

In addition, reported drug offenses were up by 43 percent in Mandan. Citywide assaults were up by 33 percent. DUIs in the city are down, however.

Much of that increase may be attributed to the fact that police personnel and resources in the area were often diverted to the site of the Dakota Access Pipeline protests.

Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler noted, three officers were generally diverted to the protest site daily, but at times as many as ten to fifteen were needed for "emergency" calls.

A police spokesman says Mandan is "on track" to see another hike in the crime rate for 2017. The city's population grew to 21,000 in 2016 - an 18 percent increase from 2010.
