David Brenner, the likable Philly street kid who influenced a generation of stand-up comedians, has died.

People magazine reports the Brenner, who had struggled with cancer in recent years died in New York Saturday.

The lanky funnyman first made his mark on late-night TV; he was a frequent guest and guest host on the Tonight Show during the Johnny Carson era.  Comedians such as Jerry Seinfeld cited the affable Brenner as an influence.

Brenner started his comedy career after working in his hometown at a local television station.  David Brenner was 78.
