Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the arch-liberal populist whose run for the presidency in 2016 created a sensation, says he plans to take another stab at it.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that the senator raised over a million dollars for his 2020 campaign just hours after announcing he was in the running.

Mr. Sanders, who gave eventual nominee Hillary Clinton a run for her money in 2016, returns to the scene at a time when left-leaning politics - and politicians - are making inroads.

Already in the running for the Democratic ticket are Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Amy Klobuchar, both of whom represent the "progressive" wing of their party.

At the same time, many are touting more mainstream Democrats like former Vice President Joe Biden, who has yet to make a definitive announcement regarding his plans for next year.

A "socialist" by his own description, Mr. Sanders holds his share of anomalous positions, such as his support of gun rights. His positions on a number of social issues and national defense lean strongly libertarian.

Asked in an interview what would be different about this presidential run, Mr. Sanders replied: “We’re going to win.”
