North Dakota National Guard troops may headed for the border. The Mexican border.

KXMB reports Governor Burgum has promised the Trump administration to deploy guardsmen from the state to patrol the patrol, if the president asks for them.

Mr. Burgum said the governors of states along the southern border are in the best position to decide if Guard troops are needed. But, he says due to our own recent emergencies, North Dakotans understand the importance of supporting other states in need.

Last week, the nation's Defense Secretary, James Mattis approved funding to send up to 4,000 Guard members to the border.

As KX notes, this is not the first time a chief executive announced plans to send thousands of soldiers to the border.

Late in his first term, President Obama sent 1,200 Guard troops to southern border states, and from 2006 to 2008, President George W. Bush deployed 6,000 National Guardsmen.

The president has drawn criticism from liberals and civil libertarians, as well as some conservatives, for what they call an overreaction to the border situation.
