This may be good news or bad, depending on whether you're coulrophobic or a fan of the circus.

America faces a clown shortage.

The New York Daily News reports that membership in the World Clown Association (yes, there really is one) has declined from 3,500 to 2,400,.

Why?  A spokesman for Clowns of America International (yes, that's real too) sums it up in one word: "attrition."  In other words, old clowns are retiring and dying and fewer new clowns are replacing them.

Is clowning - at least in America - becoming a lost art?
