WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Authorities are cautioning North Dakota churches about a convicted child sex offender from California who is allegedly operating a scam.

Authorities say Kenneth Monk has been walking into churches, telling the congregations that his wife has died in a car accident and he needs money to get to Forest, Miss., to be with his children.

Churches in Washburn, Wilton and Velva have been targeted, and each has given Monk money.

Monk is driving a burgundy Suburban with North Dakota license plates.
