'UNAUTHORIZED! The Story of the Fighting Sioux' is a documentary that takes an in-depth look at the untold story of the University of North Dakota's nickname change.

The NCAA barred teams in 2005 with Native American mascots from any post-season play because they viewed the nicknames as hostile and disrespectful. This resulted in UND retiring its well known nickname and logo of 80 years, causing an uproar across the state.

'UNAUTHORIZED,' a documentary directed, written, and produced by Matt Fern, is a collection of interviews from activists, tribal leaders, students, alumni, politicians and super fans. It follows the decade long battle of trying to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname alive.

The documentary is currently looking for funding to finish the documentary with more interviews as the University of North Dakota has officially changed its nickname to the Fighting Hawks.

A Kickstarter account was created and includes a breakdown of the funds needed and how it will be spent. Along with film expenses, a generous donation will be made to the Lakota Language Nest (Lakȟól’iyapi Hoȟpí), a program for kids that teaches the language of the Standing Rock Sioux.
