Will North Dakota Return $149 Million in Rental Assistance to the Federal Government?
North Dakota is set to send $149 million in rental assistance back to the federal government.
According to Grand Forks Herald, North Dakota "is set to return $149 million of the $352 million it received from the federal government's Emergency Rental Assistance program." Why is North Dakota trying to send all that money back? Well, one representative from the North Dakota Department of Human Services reportedly said that it is not realistic for that amount of money to be spent in the state. But housing advocates believe that more needs to be done before funds are sent back.
As it turns out, plenty of North Dakotans who need assistance have yet to get help.
One does not have to dig very deep to find out that the rental assistance program is a s***show. When you go to North Dakota's Help is Here website, the first thing you see on the site is where you can apply for assistance. A scroll down to the next item on the page reveals that there are so many inquiries for help that the North Dakota Housing Services can't keep up with responses.
Will North Dakotans who are waiting for rental assistance be able to get assistance?
There reportedly is a deadline for spending the $149 million. But if people are clearly having issues getting assistance that was promised, why would North Dakota not try to get an extension on sending the money back? Hopefully, those who need assistance are able to get it before the funds go back.
