'Click it or ticket' will be in force this Memorial Day weekend in North Dakota.

The Fargo Forum says the increased effort to ticket drivers who fail to buckle up is now in effect and will continue through June 3.

The Highway Patrol says the enforcement coincides with the release of a new statewide media campaign titled, "A Million Excuses."

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol website, "all front seat occupants must wear a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt (secondary enforcement)."

"All occupants younger than 18 must be properly restrained regardless of their location in a vehicle (primary enforcement)."

A Bismarck Tribune article from 2017 noted that while seat belt use in the Peace Garden State is up, it is still below the national average. North Dakota is among the most recent states to enact a mandatory seat belt law.
