Everywhere you turn, you're hearing about how important is is to exercise your right to vote.

You are about to hear a minority opinion.

Believe it or not, there is a case to be made for staying home and finding something - anything - to do instead.

The most obvious point in favor of this position is the fact that your single vote is extremely unlikely to make any whit of difference in itself.

There is also the fact that politicians - the ones usually at the forefront of the "get out the vote" campaign - themselves frequently abstain from voting on bills and issues when it's in their best interest to do so.

A lot of the social justice types like to throw around cliches like, "If you don't vote, you can't gripe." But you do have freedom of speech, and if you're paying taxes - something you generally don't have a choice about - you do have the right to weigh in.

So, if you don't see the point in voting, you don't have to feel guilty about it. There is a case to be made for "abstention."
