As you know, the North Dakota state high school hockey tournament has been taking place in Grand Forks over the past few days. One boys team and one girls team are going to leave Grand Forks as state champions but, unfortunately, their wins are going to be overshadowed by the poor decisions of a few Red River students.

The students of Red River High decided to stage a "white-out", which is something a group of fans do to support their team. Basically, an entire group of fans wears the exact same color, in this case white, creating a "white-out". This has been done countless times at pro, college, and high school level games across the country. Usually, it's done tastefully and provides a ton of support for the team.

However, in the case of Red River, a few students took the "white-out" idea a bit too far. As you can see from the picture above, three students wore robes and hoods very reminiscent of those worn by the KKK. UND student Shane Schuster happened to be at the game, snapped the photo, and posted it to Twitter with the caption, "I guess the Red River fans are racist?"

Schuster's photo has now gone viral and is getting national recognition from sites like MSN.com. What may be worse is the response given by an administrator stating that people were "looking for something that isn't there". Anyone who sees this photo will make the KKK connection almost immediately.

If you ask me, the most unfortunate thing about this whole situation is that these students are going to overshadow the great things that have been accomplished by the state's high school hockey teams. National media won't recognize the state champions but these three students will see their photo plastered everywhere. Hopefully, Red River High does what's right and suspends these students. This is obviously something that shouldn't be tolerated.
