About thirty boats rode to the rescue Saturday when a Walsh County  family's pontoon boat caught fire on Devils Lake.

WDAZ-TV News in Grand Forks reports David Gerszewski of Minto, North Dakota was out for a joyride with his daughter when the boat went up in flames.

"In minutes, it was totally engulfed," he told the Grand Forks Herald Sunday. "We all bailed off."

Mr. Gerszewski said he and his daughter were wearing lifejacketsat the time. The two of them, and the family dog were all rescued by the other boaters.

The family escaped without injury, but reported the boat was a total loss. They said they watched the boat burn with the other boaters for about an hour before they were able to tow the remains to shore.

The relieved father had some valuable advice for fellow boaters.

"Make sure you everybody has lifejackets," he said. "Be prepared because it happens."
