A gunman opened fire inside a gay nightclub in Florida over the weekend, killing fifty people in what is called the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Yahoo! News reports the shooter fired on the crowd inside Pulse, a club in Orlando, killing 50 people and leaving 53 others hospitalized.

The gunman himself was killed exchanging fire with officers at 5 a.m. He had taken hostages after trying to flee.

A video posted on Snapchat (and reported on YouTube) reportedly captures the sounds of firing weapons at the scene.

In a statement Sunday afternoon, President Obama called the incident an act of "terror," and "hate."

The investigation is ongoing.
