The majority of North Dakotans do not know the state motto.

I just got an email informing me that the majority of North Dakotans do not know our state motto. Embarrassed, I racked my brain, attempting to think of the phrase before I read further down the email. But, of course, I am in the 55% of North Dakotans who have no freaking clue what our state motto is. Guilty. So, what is our state motto?

Only 40% of Americans know their state motto.

“Liberty and Union Now and Forever, One and Inseparable.”

According to Solitaire Bliss, only 45% of North Dakotans know that the state motto is “Liberty and Union Now and Forever, One and Inseparable.” The website reports that, overall, 40% of Americans know their state motto. So, North Dakotans are a good 5% smarter than the rest of the nation when it comes to mottos.

Should we update the North Dakota state motto to reflect current times?

To get a little political, I am not sure our state motto holds up in today's world. Our country is so divided these days. And, to get a little closer to home, even though North Dakota is a pretty conservative place, we are pretty divided within the state as well. Would it be a bad thing if we updated our state motto to reflect the times?

Did you know North Dakota's state motto before looking at the motto map?
