UND Student Senate Seeks Tuition Limit

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The University of North Dakota Student Senate has unsuccessfully tried to head off possible big tuition hikes by offering President Robert Kelley student funds for a construction project.

The Grand Forks Herald reports the Student Senate on Sunday voted to offer $2 million in student funds set aside for a building project to be used instead for a one-stop shop for student services at the Memorial Union.

Kelley declined, saying ultimate control over tuition is with the state Board of Higher Education.

Student Body President Nick Creamer says students don't want the UND administration to seek board approval to raise tuition beyond a 3.72 percent cap.

Kelley says that given the Senate's decision he will seek other funding options but doesn't expect any of them to be ideal.
